The 2018–19 Graduate Dissertation Mentoring Award: Professor Amit Roy-Chowdhury

Each year the Graduate Council and Graduate Division present the Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award to one or two UCR faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to the training of advanced graduate students. It is my pleasure to announce that this year’s winner is Amit Roy-Chowdhury.

Dr. Roy-Chowdhury is Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Roy-Chowdhury leads the Video Computing Group at UCR. The Video Computing Group at UCR conducts research on the foundations and applications of computer vision, image processing, and statistical learning from images/videos. His research is related to camera networks, human behavior modeling, face recognition, and bioimage analysis. Prof. Roy-Chowdhury's research has been supported by various US government agencies and private industries, including a recent $1.2M grant from the Office of Naval Research to make artificial intelligent (AI) systems smarter.

Present and former students speak of his supportive and guiding mentoring style. He was praised believing in his students. It was noted that he makes a lasting difference in the life of his graduate students. For his many efforts in mentoring graduate students, he is being honored with the Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award.
